Tools Used

Moisture trapped inside containers accelerates food spoilage.
SCALE OF THE PROBLEM
60% of the respondants face issues with moisture running into food
87.9% prefer to store food in container being glass and plastic
56% of respondents consider sustainability an important factor when choosing food containers.
58% consider lifespan of a food container before purchasing it
Despite widespread use of airtight containers, moisture-related spoilage remains common.
WHO IS AFFECTED?

Students
Limited space, compact storage needs.

Homemakers
Bulk ingredients, long-term storage demands.

Profesionnals
Pre meal prep routines, freshness retention needs.

Eco-conscious Users
Plastic avoidance, sustainable storage challenges.
Different lifestyles, one common problem — moisture-driven spoilage.
NATURE'S STRATEGY FOR MOISTURE REGULATION
Camels regulate heat and moisture through layered insulation that controls exchange rather than trapping it.
• Dense fur insulation blocks external heat transfer from the hot environment to the skin
• Maintains up to 30 °C temperature gradient between surface and skin
• Minimizes need for evaporative cooling (sweating)
• Conserves water through reduced sweating

Camel hair microstructure enhances insulation at a microscopic scale.

• Three-layer fiber architecture - cuticle, cortex, medulla
• Air-filled core traps heat
• Enables insulation at micro scale

Pure PLA
Pure chitosan
Chitosan + PHBV
Chitosan + PLA
Material testing revealed distinct differences in moisture permeability between the films.
• PLA: strongest moisture barrier (lowest WVTR)
•Chitosan: moderate permeability enabling moisture regulation
•Chitosan + PHBV and Chitosan + PLA : higher permeability due to polymer incompatibility
•Chitosan: moderate permeability enabling moisture regulation
•Chitosan + PHBV and Chitosan + PLA : higher permeability due to polymer incompatibility
Rather than blending materials, functional separation through layering proved more effective for moisture regulation.
This insight informed the development of a multi-layer container architecture, where different materials perform specific roles within the system.
Full material testing methodology and analysis available in the research paper.
